The OWM Take on AI and SEO: Optimization Was Never About Being Fastest

By Lucas Arnatt, Web Strategist & CEO

Key Takeaways

  • Google’s own data shows AI-generated content rarely dominates top rankings. Only 5.3% of top-three positions are fully AI-written, and indexation rates drop as AI content share climbs.
  • Speed is not the same as visibility. AI accelerates research and drafting, but Google continues to reward original thinking, firsthand experience and distinctive voice.
  • Publishing more, faster, can actively work against a brand. Volume without originality dilutes the signals that build long-term authority.
  • The OWM framework treats optimization as a quality and authority discipline first, with AI as an accelerant inside that system, not a replacement for it.
  • The businesses gaining visibility now are the ones using AI to think more deeply, not less.

A business in Cochrane’s Historic Downtown and a business in Calgary’s Beltline are facing the exact same pressure this year. AI can now write, publish and distribute content faster than any team could manage on its own. The question neither of them has been asked clearly enough is whether faster actually means better.

The word “optimization” has some assumed meanings, such as optimization is simply about speed. As such, somewhere in the last two years of AI emergence, it started predominately meaning fast and frequent. Publish more. Publish sooner. Let AI carry the volume. That assumption that speed alone defines optimization has proven to be lacking, and the research now backs that up directly.

What the Research Actually Shows

Two recent studies, when read together, tell a clear story about AI content and search visibility.

Search Engine Land’s recent analysis makes the case plainly. AI is genuinely useful for research, organizing data and speeding up strategy work. In one example, Gemini grouped more than 2,000 declining keywords into topical clusters in minutes, work that would otherwise take hours. But the article draws a strong realization: The faster AI makes it to publish, the easier it becomes to sacrifice the original thinking and firsthand experience that Google increasingly rewards.

Google has long touted “quality over quantity” for brands and website content. This stance was needed against the decades’ old battle against spam and low quality content. “AI slop” isn’t far from it’s spammy cousin, but the explosion of AI’s influence and reach has further tightened the reigns on content evaluation.

An Ahrefs study of 331,000 pages puts numbers behind that warning. Only 5.3% of pages in the top three search positions are fully AI-generated, and 9% are made up of 80% or more AI content. That means the overwhelming majority of top-ranking pages still carry substantial human authorship. The study also found something more telling for the long term. Indexation rates drop from roughly 49% for pages with low AI content to about 40% for pages with very high AI content. Google is not blocking AI outright. It is simply less likely to index and rank pages that read like everyone else’s.

This is the short and long-term distinction that matters. A brand can publish faster today and still lose visibility over months, simply because the content never earns the authority signals that hold rankings steady.

The Optimization Trap

Here is the trap. A content calendar full of fast, AI-assisted posts can look like progress. Traffic reports might even show a short-term bump. But if every page sounds like it could have been written by any business in any city, nothing about it earns lasting trust from search engines, from AI systems, or from the people reading it.

Real optimization, the kind that builds visibility that compounds instead of fading, has always depended on three things.

  1. Original thinking that reflects how a specific business actually solves a specific problem.
  2. Firsthand experience that no competitor can copy, because it belongs to your team and your clients.
  3. A distinctive voice that stays recognizable across every page and post.

These are the same principles behind E-E-A-T, the standard Google has used for years to judge whether content deserves trust. AI has not changed what earns that trust. It has only changed how quickly a business can produce content that either strengthens it or quietly erodes it.

Where AI Genuinely Earns Its Place

None of this means AI should be avoided. Used well, it is a legitimate accelerant in producing quality content. Such tasks as:

  • Clustering keyword and topic research into organized themes, the way Gemini did with those 2,000 declining keywords.
  • Summarizing technical audits and surfacing patterns across large data sets.
  • Drafting structural outlines that a human writer then builds on.
  • Providing a deep set of diverse references that a human editor can more quickly review and integrate.

Used this way, AI protects time for the work that actually differentiates a brand. Even if you are creating repeatable skills or prompts, the best ones will be nuanced by a human editor to ensure a unique and meaningful output that supports the human-led mission of a business’s or organization’s service to its real-life community.

Where It Still Needs a Human

  • Voice and judgment. Deciding what a client’s story actually is, not just how to phrase it.
  • Firsthand, local expertise. Knowing what matters to a homeowner in Calgary or a founder building a business near Cochrane is not something a model can generate on its own.
  • Final quality control. Every draft still needs a person who understands the client, the market and the brand to shape it into something worth publishing.

What OWM Means By “Optimized”

OWM may be a new term to most – yes another acronym to add to the pile! – but OWM stands out as it does not replace the term “SEO” but extends beyond it.
My experience as a CEO of a Web marketing company since 2001, where I’ve seen so many others fall into the illusion that “faster is always better”, led to the basis of OWM being established many years ago. Only more recently has it started to gain traction as an umbrella term, of which SEO is a part, a definitive pillar.

The issue that I’ve had with the term SEO for many years, is that Google itself has shown consistently that brand visibility extends beyond search results. It requires a holistic approach. If you’re doing SEO properly, it requires going much deeper than just rankings, it requires building on those factors that Google touts under E-E-A-T, across many channels and many different touch points beyond just search rankings. So, OWM is an organic response to the long-time question that resurfaces when a new acronym emerges, “Is SEO dead?”
As long as there is search, then SEO has a place, but it (to me) is not the end all, be all. The name it self, “Search Engine Optimization” is self limiting.
OWM is the answer to this by expanding the focus beyond search to what is actually being addressed: All of Web marketing. Not just search, not just social, not just AI citations. The whole thing.
The difference between just “web marketing” and OWM is that one word, “Optimization”, which, by definition sets a distinct and purposeful focal point for web marketing efforts.

It is also inherently intentional that OWM is pronounced “OM”, the universal mantra, the sound of the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end.

This distinction is exactly why we built the Optimized Web Marketing (OWM) framework the way we did. The Data & Technology pillar of OWM treats AI and automation as infrastructure, tools that support the work, never a replacement for the original thinking behind it, nor the unique human experience that truly sets it apart.

That principle runs through every layer of what we build. Quality managed hosting keeps a site fast, secure and stable, which matters just as much for search visibility as the words on the page. Custom WordPress development gives a site the technical foundation to actually earn the crawl and indexation Google rewards, rather than fighting a bloated template. SEO services built around original research, real local expertise and a distinctive voice are what turn that technical foundation into visibility that holds up over months and years, not just weeks.

Elevating a brand was never about how much content it could produce. It has always been about whether that content actually sounds like the brand, backed by a website built to support it. That is the standard OWM was built around, and it is the same standard behind every BlindDrop client engagement since 2001.

The Real Optimization Question

The right question for any business right now is not how much content, nor how quickly, AI can help you publish. It is whether what you publish is truly unique, insightful and valuable.

Of course speed is critical to any online or marketing process, but it should not be the singular goal for any efforts that fall under the OWM framework.

Whether you are building a brand from Cochrane’s Historic Downtown or growing one out of Calgary, the businesses that will still be visible a year from now are the ones optimizing for quality and originality today, not just speed.
