Why Chase a Moving Target? How BlindDrop Builds for Google and AI Search at the Same Time

Key Takeaways

  • Google’s AI Overviews now appear on 88% of tracked commercial searches, up from under half a year ago. Even so, AI referral traffic still produces a small share of actual business results.
  • A 2026 benchmark study found organic search delivers 39 times more traffic than AI assistants. Despite that, AI referrals still produce far fewer total conversions, even at a higher individual rate.
  • Brand recommendations inside ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity shift constantly. In fact, a recent study found 79% of tested prompts changed their recommended brand within four weeks.
  • Chasing AI visibility as its own strategy means optimizing for a target that moves weekly. By contrast, strong organic content already satisfies most of what AI systems look for.
  • The OWM framework treats traditional SEO and AI visibility as one system, built once. As a result, a Calgary or Cochrane business earns both forms of visibility without paying for two separate strategies.

AI search is growing fast. Even so, it is still a small fraction of how customers actually find a business. This year, Google’s AI Overviews nearly doubled their reach into commercial search. Yet most of a business’s traffic, leads, and revenue still come from traditional organic search. The smartest response to this shift is not two separate marketing budgets. Instead, it is one strategy, built once, that satisfies both.

The AI Search Hype Cycle, and Why It Matters to Your Marketing Budget

Marketing agencies love a new acronym. Over the past year, AEO, GEO, and AI visibility have become their own sales pitch. Often, they are sold as an entirely separate line item from traditional SEO. Before paying for a second strategy, a business owner deserves a clear look at the evidence.

What AI Overviews and AI Recommendations Actually Do Well

Google’s AI Overviews are expanding into commercial search faster than almost any other feature in the company’s history. A Semrush study tracked through Search Engine Land found AI Overviews appeared on 88% of 400 tracked commercial keywords in August 2026. That is up from 45.75% a year earlier. Notably, review searches saw the largest jump, climbing from 30% to nearly 90% coverage.

This growth is not accidental. After all, Google’s own incentive is to keep searchers inside its ecosystem. That is where ad placements sit, alongside or within AI-generated answers. In other words, this is simply how the business model works. It is worth stating plainly, rather than treating it as a hidden agenda. Either way, a business that ignores AI Overviews entirely is ignoring a feature now present on most commercial search results.

Where the Hype Outpaces the Evidence

Here is what the hype leaves out. Specifically, AI referral traffic, measured against the traffic organic search still delivers, remains tiny.

A benchmark study from SEO Works found organic search delivers 39 times more traffic than AI assistants. For every 100 conversions organic search produces, AI referrals produce about 3.2. Meanwhile, the same study found AI referral traffic converts worse against paid search, at 0.67 times the rate. It converts better against direct traffic, at 2.48 times the rate.

Elsewhere, a separate analysis looked at 145 million sessions across 100 websites, cited in the same roundup. It found ChatGPT sessions amounted to just 0.62% of the volume driven by Google organic search. True, ChatGPT visitors converted at a notably higher rate than Google organic visitors. Yet Google still drove 96.5% of total conversions across every channel measured.

This is the real story. On a per-visitor basis, AI referral traffic converts well. Still, there are not enough of those visitors yet to matter at the scale organic search already operates at.

The Numbers Nobody Is Advertising: AI Traffic Versus Organic Traffic

Put simply, covering both audiences with one system, not two competing budgets, is what actually keeps a brand visible. It works no matter which doorway a customer walks through.

How Small the AI Referral Slice Still Is

The data above bears repeating in plain terms. Organic search is not being replaced. Rather, it is being supplemented by a channel that is still a rounding error in most businesses’ total traffic.

Why AI-Referred Visitors Convert Differently Than You Might Expect

Typically, AI-referred visitors arrive further along in their decision. That is because the AI conversation already did some of the comparison work for them. This explains the higher individual conversion rate. Still, it does not change the fact that organic search delivers the volume driving most revenue.

The Problem With Chasing AI Visibility as Its Own Strategy

Even where AI visibility does matter, it is a genuinely difficult target to hit consistently.

Brand Recommendations Change Faster Than You Can Optimize For Them

A study from AI visibility platform Envoyra analyzed 2,720 answers across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity over four weeks. Notably, the four platforms disagreed on the top software brand in four of five categories tested. Across every combination tested, 79% showed at least one change in recommended brand during the study.

Brand recognition did not guarantee a recommendation either. In fact, a well-known brand was just as likely to be left out of an answer as a lesser-known competitor. This depended on which platform answered, and when.

Ultimately, this is what makes AI visibility a moving target in the truest sense. A business cannot optimize permanently for a result that reshuffles weekly across four platforms it does not control.

Headless Content: The Real Fork in the Road Other Agencies Are Choosing

In response, some agencies have started building what Ahrefs recently described as headless content marketing. These are pages built solely to be scraped and summarized by AI. There is no expectation that a human will ever read them directly. Essentially, these pages strip out personal experience, nuance, and genuine voice. In exchange, they offer terse, machine-friendly answers.

This is a real fork in the road. One path treats a website as a message to customers. The other treats it as raw material for an algorithm. It assumes people will only ever interact with a brand through an AI summary. BlindDrop does not build that way. Instead, we assume real people, in Cochrane and Calgary, still read what a business publishes.

The Moving Target Only Needs a Light Touch, Not a Rebuild

What Traditional SEO Already Gets Right for AI Visibility

Ahrefs’ own research found 88% of URLs cited by ChatGPT already rank in its general search index. In other words, content that already ranks well in Google is already most of the way there. Strong topic clusters, clear structure, and genuine expertise satisfy both systems at once. After all, both systems are ultimately looking for the same signals: relevant content that answers a real question well.

The Small Adjustments That Close the Gap

Fortunately, a handful of specific, low-effort adjustments close most of the remaining gap.

  • Lead with the answer. State the conclusion in the first sentence, then support it. That is because AI systems pull passages, and a self-contained answer near the top is easiest to lift.
  • Write declarative statements. For example, a sentence like “managed hosting prevents 90% of downtime from outdated plugins” is citable. A hedged sentence full of qualifiers is not.
  • Be specific with names and numbers. Concrete claims give AI systems something quotable. By contrast, a vague claim gives them nothing to cite.

None of this requires abandoning content built for real readers. Rather, it requires writing the content a good business already should be writing. Just slightly more precisely.

Why BlindDrop Builds This Way: The OWM Framework Advantage

One Methodology, Not Two Separate Budgets

This is exactly the thinking behind the OWM framework. Rather than selling AEO as a separate product on top of SEO, OWM treats visibility as one connected system. In practice, strong content, a technically sound website, and genuine local expertise do double duty. They satisfy Google’s organic algorithm and an AI system’s retrieval process at the same time. These were never actually two different problems.

Previously, we have written about how human-managed AI fits into this model. We have also covered how quality and originality, not speed, drive lasting visibility. Here, this post extends that same argument to AI search specifically. And elsewhere, we have covered what happens when a business’s rankings look fine but the phone stops ringing. Often, that gap is this exact problem in disguise.

What This Means for a Calgary or Cochrane Business Choosing an Agency

Right now, a business choosing between agencies will likely meet one selling SEO and AEO as two separate services. Each comes with its own invoice. In effect, that approach chases a moving target twice over. BlindDrop’s SEO services, managed WordPress hosting, and digital marketing work differently. Instead, a technically sound, well-written website already does most of the work either system needs.

The Real Question to Ask Before Hiring a Marketing Company

The right question is not which agency has the best AEO package. Instead, it is which agency understands that one strategy, built well, was always the answer to both.

If your business is ready for a marketing approach built on this understanding, rather than two competing budgets chasing two moving targets, request a free quote from BlindDrop. From there, we will show you exactly how OWM brings organic and AI visibility together under one plan.
